Public Art and YOU

Over the past several years, Public Art in the City of Syracuse has become an important asset to our continued revitalization. We are blessed with many fine examples of Public Art in our permanent collection, and have a dedicated Public Art Coordinator and Public Art Commission who work diligently with artists to continue bringing artwork into focus for our community members, visitors and tourists.

The Public Art Commission meets monthly to review and make recommendations on artwork, and have worked with very scant funding since its inception to make Public Art a growing possibility in Syracuse. Our Public Art Coordinator is a split position, and the same person who coordinates historic preservation activities for our City. Syracuse also has a Public Art Task Force and a Public Artist in Residence program, which has brought our collection of Public Art to amazing new heights!

-->SYRACUSE PUBLIC ART ORDINANCE

With the recent influx of major development projects occurring in the City of Syracuse, it is the perfect time to evolve our Public Art Ordinance to include a 1% for Public Art program. A percent for art program refers to a program (often a City ordinance) where a fee, usually some percentage of the project cost, is placed on large scale development projects in order to fund and install public art.

Adding this program to our Public Art Ordinance would dramatically bolster the long term health of our existing Public Art programs, bring necessary attention to the Public Art process, and allow us to continue adding these assets to our growing collection. This very small amount has the potential of going a very long way in creating a financial foundation for the Public Art process, continuing community dialogue and enhancing knowledge in regards to Public Art within the City of Syracuse.

The Public Art Commission could utilize these funds for artist stipends, development of prime public art sites, finishing the inventory of the City’s vast public art collection, supporting outreach and education about the Public Art process, amongst a myriad of possibilities. Through a program of this nature, we can continue to highlight the amazing creativity and talent of our local and regional artists, which continues to grow in numbers and depth. The benefits of Public Art, and the ways in which a small percentage of funding can be used to enhance our Public Art collection and process are numerous.

Support an amendment to Syracuse's Public Art Ordinance to include 1% for Public Art.

Below is an example of development projects (currently underway in Syracuse) and their 1% contribution to a Public Art Fund if this ordinance was already in place:

Marriot Hotel, Armory: $31 Million Project

1% to Public Art = $310,000

Half of 1% = 155,000

WCNY Studios/Near Westside: $20 Million Project

1% to Public Art = $200,000

Half of 1% = $100,000

Onondaga Creekwalk: $10 Million Project

1% to Public Art = $100,000

Half of 1% - $50,000

Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare/Outpatient Clinic/Northside = $1.2 Million Renovation Project

1% to Public Art = $12,000

Half of 1% = $6,000

Inner Harbor Development: $350 Million Project

1% to Public Art = $3,500,000

Half of 1% = $1,750,000
